As an answer to Toronto’s ongoing struggle to create more affordable housing, the City has allowed homeowners to build laneway and garden suites, provided they meet a set of qualifying guidelines.

This extra housing can suit the needs of aging parents, dependent adult children, and students (inter-generational living) within a family unit. Additionally, it can be used as a rental property.

Since there is no land cost, and often the existing garage can be modified, it provides a way to afford a property in the increased housing market. Coupled with the tiny house movement that exemplifies the freedom and pleasure that can result from a minimalist lifestyle, these cozy units have become increasingly popular and offer an unparalleled number of design options.
