6 Tips to Avoid Problems With Your Insulation Contractor

Jan 09, 2022

Do you have issues with your home's insulation that need the attention of an experienced insulation contractor? You're making the right decision by hiring experts to get the job done, but there are a few tips that are worth bearing in mind to avoid disaster along the way.

We've seen it before: homeowners in Toronto and the GTA do their due diligence by researching spray foam insulation contractors in their area, only to experience less-than-stellar service that they could have avoided. That’s why the eco-friendly home insulation service professionals at Foam Comfort have put together this list of must-know tips to avoid problems with the
foam insulation contractor you hire.

1. Make Sure to Go Through the Vetting Process

First things first: you'll want to conduct a thorough vetting process that can help you sort the wheat from the proverbial chaff. You must ask potential contractors about their history of performance in spray foam insulation for areas such as attics, crawl spaces, and exterior walls.

At Foam Comfort, we recommend inquiring about a contractor's experience working with the siding material your home uses. Working with vinyl siding, for example, is a different beast compared to working with wood or brick.

2. The Contractor Should Know About the Products They Use—Even the Ones They Don’t

Next, ensure that the contractor you hire has a solid understanding of the different insulation materials they may need to use when tackling your project. A contractor that knows about the different products available for use during insulation projects can explain why they're using specific products and can recommend the best ones for your unique needs.

3. Ensure They Are a Licensed Contractor

It should go without saying that the contractor you hire must furnish proof of their license to operate in their province. Unlicensed contractors can cost you money in the long run, particularly if they cause damage to your home for which they have no insurance to cover.

4. Is the Contractor Insured? Do They Offer a Lifetime Warranty?

Any contractor you hire must have insurance to protect you if they cause an accident on your property. Additionally, your contractor should show proof of a lifetime warranty that covers the product they're using. Any issues you run into down the road, in this case, can be covered by a lifetime warranty that your contractor guarantees.

5. How Experienced Is the Contractor?

Remember to ask your contractor about their complete history of installing insulation material on projects similar to yours. It's also important to determine whether the contractor you're working with is a specialist or generalist—specialized experience with insulation material is a far cry from general experience dabbling in a little bit of roofing and siding in addition to the occasional insulation project.

6. Are They Trying to Oversell You?

It’s never good when the professional you hire tries to push a steep price tag on you. Engage with more than one insulation contractor to compare estimates; this will ensure that you will make a deal you won’t regret!

7. Hire a Professional Today!

For this 1930’s-built house, a re-roof allowed our crew of trained professionals to spray down into the roof joists from above. The Foam Comfort Crew, along with the careful coordination of a highly skilled roofing crew, allowed the two trades to work seamlessly to prepare the area for insulation, install a 2lb spray foam solution and then to close, seal and shingle the roof. All old homes built in this area had minimal to no insulation in the roofline and attic areas often involved knee walls and dormers, further adding to the complexity. Once the old roof was removed, a cardboard baffle was secured in the joist cavity and then a 2lb medium density spray foam was applied. The 2lb foam is a vapor barrier and will not allow any condensation to form in the roof cavity below as it provides a monolithic barrier. Removing lathe and plaster from the interior is a major and totally disruptive endeavor, so using an exterior method to insulate, such as what was done in this scenario, can significantly reduce the mess and inconvenience to the inhabitants.

Insulating a camper van is essential for creating a comfortable and livable space. It helps regulate temperature, reduce noise, and prevent condensation. Closed-cell spray foam insulation is the most popular insulation option for camper van builds. It provides a high R-value (a measure of insulation effectiveness) and seals all gaps and cracks. Closed-cell spray foam insulation is also waterproof and prevents condensation.
