5 Worthwhile Advantages Of Spray Foam

Jul 06, 2021

Spray foam insulation has been gaining a lot of popularity recently, despite having been introduced in the 1980s. Since then, it has advanced significantly. Compared with traditional fibreglass batt insulation, spray foam insulation is almost always the better option for home insulation because of its longevity and ease of installation among other factors.

Contrary to what people may believe, insulation just doesn’t keep your house warm during cold weather, but it also helps keep things cool inside in the summer by preventing hot air from outside from getting in. Therefore, having effective insulation in your home creates comfortable indoor temperatures and also helps you save on heating and cooling costs.

Spray foam is an excellent choice of insulation for many reasons, some of which are listed below.

1. Deters Moisture

Traditional insulation can get wet if there are cracks or openings around pipes and vents, leading to the growth of mold and bacteria. Spray foam insulation doesn’t have this problem as it is hydrophobic (does not absorb water).  In addition it acts as both an air and vapour barrier.

2. Reduces Energy Bills

Spray foam insulation is very effective in preventing heat loss, as well as loss of cool air generated from an air conditioner during warm weather. This can lead to higher energy efficiency, saving you money on heating and cooling costs as air won’t be escaping from the walls or roof.

Spray foam insulation keeps the air inside at a constant temperature as it creates an air-tight seal wherever it is installed, filling all holes and gaps. This protects your home from cold drafts blasting in and from warm air escaping to the outside. Likewise in hotter months, it keeps cool air inside and prevents hot air from getting inside.

3. Increases Wall Strength

Spray foam insulation can increase the strength of your walls because it adheres and hardens against its materials. This reinforces its structure, adding strength to it. Spray foam insulation gets into all the corners and crevices in walls, ceilings, and attics and can also seal any cracks, solidifying their structure.

To increase wall strength, higher density closed-cell spray foam is recommended over open-cell spray foam, which is less dense and does not have the same air barrier and vapour barrier qualities.

4. Improves Air Quality

Spray foam can significantly improve the quality of your indoor air because it acts as an effective barrier against dust, mold, pollen, and other pollutants and contaminants. Many of these allergens actually enter the home through walls and not through windows or doors. Therefore, insulation can greatly help guard against allergens from entering your home.

If you have allergies, asthma, or other chemical sensitivities, spray foam insulation is the best choice as it helps keep allergens out. Additionally, insects and rodents aren’t attracted to spray foam because it is a synthetic material and cannot be used for food or a nest.

5. Reduces Sound

Spray foam insulation provides excellent soundproofing because it gets into all of the cracks and crevices in your walls. It is therefore effective in blocking out noises from both outside and from adjacent rooms in the home. The insulation soundproofs the walls by absorbing sound waves so that you have a quieter home, lending you greater privacy.

6. Lower GWP (global warming potential)

Today’s new generation spray foams use a low GWP (<1) blowing agent based on HFO chemistry. By changing to HFO chemistry, we are reducing the global warming impact.  Using spray foam insulation not only keeps you comfortable but it is good for the planet!

For this 1930’s-built house, a re-roof allowed our crew of trained professionals to spray down into the roof joists from above. The Foam Comfort Crew, along with the careful coordination of a highly skilled roofing crew, allowed the two trades to work seamlessly to prepare the area for insulation, install a 2lb spray foam solution and then to close, seal and shingle the roof. All old homes built in this area had minimal to no insulation in the roofline and attic areas often involved knee walls and dormers, further adding to the complexity. Once the old roof was removed, a cardboard baffle was secured in the joist cavity and then a 2lb medium density spray foam was applied. The 2lb foam is a vapor barrier and will not allow any condensation to form in the roof cavity below as it provides a monolithic barrier. Removing lathe and plaster from the interior is a major and totally disruptive endeavor, so using an exterior method to insulate, such as what was done in this scenario, can significantly reduce the mess and inconvenience to the inhabitants.

Insulating a camper van is essential for creating a comfortable and livable space. It helps regulate temperature, reduce noise, and prevent condensation. Closed-cell spray foam insulation is the most popular insulation option for camper van builds. It provides a high R-value (a measure of insulation effectiveness) and seals all gaps and cracks. Closed-cell spray foam insulation is also waterproof and prevents condensation.
